The reality about weight loss…is that you cannot control it.

Do you disagree?

Go stand on a scale and decide to lose 5 pounds.

How’d that work out for you? Did the number drop on command, or did it not budge? Of course it didn’t budge.

How about those days where you wake up and you’ve lost a pound or two and you are stoked! And then the next day you wake up 3 pounds heavier?

Did you know that your weight is affected by so many different factors?

Water intake, salt intake, bowel movements, gastrointestinal emptying, fiber intake, inflammation, dehydration, stress, food intake, glycogen (food energy) storage in the muscle, water retention, and many other factors all affect your weight on the scale BUT have NOTHING to do with fat loss or gain.

And yet you spend your precious time obsessing about your weight as if you could magically control it. You celebrate when you’re down a pound or two and you go into a depression when you gain a pound or two. Stop doing this to yourself.

The good news is that you do have complete control over most of those factors that do influence your weight. These are your choices about the most important components of fitness; diet, exercise, and recovery.

Think about this…

Your current weight, fat levels, and body composition are the sum total result of all the choices you have made over the course of your life up to this point primarily stemming from your habits around diet, exercise, and recovery (or lack thereof).

Take a minute to think back over the last three years of your life. What kinds of foods did you eat most often? How intensely did you exercise, for how long, and how often? How much sleep did you get? how much de-stressing activities did you engage in?

Now look at yourself in a full-length mirror. You are looking directly at the result of your past choices.

If you are pleased with what you see then keep on eating and exercising the way you have been. It’s working for you!

If you’re not satisfied with what you see, then it’s time to start making new choices and declaring new commitments to yoruself around your diet, exercise, and recovery. Here are some suggestions we know will help:

Healthy food choices:

  • Choose to eat primarily whole foods that only look as they do in nature.
  • Choose to only eat when you’re hungry and to stop eating before you feel physically full.
  • Choose to not eat processed foods, junk food, sugary drinks or sweets.
  • Choose to eat a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and high protein every day.

Healthy exercise choices…

  • Choose to get up early in the morning, when you could be sleeping, to invest 30-60 min of your time into nurturing and honoring your body through exercise.
  • Choose to be consistent with your workout schedule, giving exercise the same importance as a doctor’s appointment, your job, or your kids; your health impacts all these areas of life.
  • Choose to change your workout routine often, completely change your workout routine every 3-4 weeks.
  • Choose to push yourself to new levels of intensity, increase the weight you are lifting and challenge yourself more.

Don’t spend another minute obsessing about the number on your scale. You are WAY smarter than that.

Focus your energy on the choices you make regarding what you eat, how you exercise and make sure to get enough sleep and recovery.
