What’s up Allies!

Today we want to address some lies that popular magazines, websites, and blogs often tout.

A while back I saw a popular publication that boasted the headline of “8 Lies Trainers Tell You.”

This quickly peaked my interest.

Lies! us? No way. We here at Iron Allies Fitness only ever give advice we know will benefit our clients with sustainable fat loss or lean muscle development and is a healthy practice. We also don’t give people advice in areas we aren’t knowledgeable or areas we haven’t done substantial research on.

So I read the article and was not impressed. The “lies” were nothing but a bunch of fitness myths and definitely nothing that I’ve told my clients. These were common fitness practices that were unhealthy, overhyped, or unsubstantiated by scientific research.

Then I got to thinking about all the lies that some of these publications try to get us to believe, and realized that this was the real story to tell.

So here you have it – “8 Lies Fitness Magazines Tell You:”

Lie #1: You Need A Fancy Diet, Supplement or Technique To Burn Fat or ‘Lose Weight’

Designer, brand name protein powders, bars and diet foods grace the glossy pages – looking gourmet and mouthwatering. And very expensive. The bold claims on these “superfoods” make them quite tempting, but keep your wallet in your pocket. Healthy fat loss and muscle development is best achieved by eating a diet of wholesome, real foods. No diet, gimmick, or supplement will provide more benefit than a healthy sustainable nutrition practice.

  • Eat real food, not expensive diet foods or supplements; and definitely don’t engage in dieting gimmicks.

Lie #2: Transformations Are Quick, Easy and Simple. Eat Less and Move More

So many of the one-page success stories water-down the truth about what it takes to transform from ‘before’ to ‘after’. In order to showcase their reader’s successes, one hundred pound meltdowns are condensed to a few paragraphs which undoubtedly say “Suzy ate small meals and exercised 60 minutes 3 to 4 times per week.” I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but massive transformations take much more effort and focus than that. Not to mention that most before and after pictures are adjusted by photoshop editing, airbrushing, lighting, dehydration, tanning, and proper angling during photo shoots.

  • Don’t believe that massive body transformations are easy, expect to put in hard work and dedication.

Lie #3: You Need The Latest Fitness Fashion or Product In Order To Achieve Results

The latest fashions and techy devices look great on those fitness models. Who knew that spandex could come in so many flashy colors and styles? And all the benefits of that hundred dollar tank top seem totally worth it, right? And don’t forget that you you can’t go without the latest fitness tech device if you expect to see results….that kind of stuff is actually not the key to results. Your old t-shirt will actually work just as well as the fancy stuff.

  • You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on fitness fashion, or the latest tech device to get the fat to come off or make you look better.

Lie #4: You Can Still Eat Junk Food And Look Like A Fitness Model So Long As It ‘Fits Your Macros’

By now I’m sure you’re seeing the trend of less-than-healthy advertisements peppered throughout your favorite fitness magazine and promoted by your local fitness gurus about how ‘as long as it fits your macros, you can eat whatever you want.’ This simply is not true and not substantiated by any real science. Your body is far more dynamic and more complex needs than just calories and macros. A common theme is for people and companies to offer “healthy” versions of your favorite junk foods. While these lighter versions may be slightly less junky ‘alternatives’ to the original food item, often times gimmicky foods that say ‘high protein’ ‘low fat’ or ‘sugar free’ aren’t always the best for you and can still hinder your results. And you can’t just eat a set calorie amount and macros with junk food and expect to see all the results you want.

  • “Healthy” junk food is still junk, so choose wholesome, real foods instead.

Lie #5: You Can Develop Abs or A Six Pack In Just A Few Weeks

Catchy headlines sell magazines. “Flat Abs in 3 Weeks!” “Get a Killer Core by Summer!” “Rock Hard Abs Fast!” The truth is that real results take time. You didn’t pack on all those unwanted pounds in 3 weeks, so don’t expect to lose it in 3 weeks.

  • Don’t believe headline-hype, real results take real time.

Lie #6: Pills and Powders Will Get You The Results You Want

Fat burning pills. Cleanse pills. Vitamin pills. Super Food pills. You name the pill or powder and it’s probably on display in a pretty ad depicting fitness models with perfect physiques. Be wary of any bottle of pills with extraordinary claims.

  • Results do not come in pill form, but by hard workouts and solid nutrition.

Lie #7: Don’t Eat Carbs…Unless They Are Carbs From Our Advertisers

On one page you’ll read about the horrors of carbohydrates and how cutting back will get you to effortlessly drop pounds. On the next you’ll see a super lean fitness model holding up a some supplement bar or food item loaded with carbs and processed sugars with a sassy smile. She eats this brand of food item, so it means you should too if you want to look like her. See the hypocrisy here?

  • Carbohydrates and sugar aren’t evil, you can still eat some, but monitor your overall intake regardless of its brand.

Lie #8: You Don’t Need A Trainer To See Maximum Results

A recurring theme in fitness magazines is the idea that you can do your body transformation on your own – no personal trainer needed. It’s a great theme for the magazine since it means you’ll keep buying the latest issue for your fitness advice. The truth is that people who actually transform their bodies and sustain their results either are a fitness professional already, ave worked with a trainer before, or are planning on working with a trainer.

  • Real results are achieved with the guidance of a professional trainer. Always seek out knowledgeable professionals if you want to learn how to sustain lasting results.
